Loire Valley Reds: Freshness, Fruit and Elegance

While the Loire is renowned for its white wines, it also produces red wines with distinct identity. These reds are known for their natural freshness, balance, moderate alcohol and expressive fruit-driven profiles.

Iconic grape varieties

Cabernet Franc is the signature grape in appellations like Chinon, Saumur, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, yielding wines ranging from soft to structured, with notes of red berries, violets, pepper and forest floor. Pinot Noir, Gamay and Côt (Malbec) also play a role, offering finesse, fruitiness and body.

Terroirs along the Loire River

From Centre-Loire to Anjou and Touraine, the region’s varied soils (limestone, clay, gravel) and climates produce reds with unique personality. Most are enjoyable young, though many also have aging potential thanks to their precision and minerality.

Food pairings

Loire reds pair beautifully with white meats, poultry, pâtés, roasted vegetables, vegetarian dishes and soft cheeses. Their liveliness and balance make them versatile wines for everyday dining and refined cuisine alike.

A progressive and sustainable region

The Loire Valley is at the forefront of organic, biodynamic and natural winemaking in France. This commitment to sustainability yields honest, vibrant and expressive reds that reflect both nature and place.
