Savoie Red Wines: Alpine Freshness and Mountain Character
Still under the radar, Savoie red wines charm with their light body, pure aromas and close connection to their alpine environment. These unique cuvées highlight rare local grapes and eco-conscious viticulture.
Local and expressive grape varieties
Savoie reds are mainly made from Mondeuse, known for its deep color, black fruit and spice notes; Gamay, offering light and supple wines; and Pinot Noir in select areas. Mondeuse, the region’s signature grape, adds structure, freshness and aging potential.
Unique mountain terroirs
Planted on steep slopes with diverse soils (clay-limestone, moraine, limestone scree), Savoie vineyards benefit from a temperate mountain climate, producing low-alcohol, vibrant and digestible wines.
Food pairings
Savoie reds pair well with local cuisine: sausages, crozets, semi-hard cheeses, as well as grilled poultry, vegetarian dishes or lighter meals. Their freshness also makes them ideal summer wines.
A vineyard in revival
Once overlooked, the Savoie region is experiencing a revival driven by a new generation focused on terroir preservation and native grape expression. Many wines are now certified organic or biodynamic.
