The Terroirs of the Rhône
The Rhône Valley stretches from Lyon in the North to Arles in the South and comprises 28 appellations and 27 grape varieties. This vast area provides diverse soils and climates depending on the location of the vineyards.
What Are the Grape Varieties of Côtes du Rhône White?
The main grape varieties represent at least 80% of white wine blends: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and Viognier.
Producers can complement their blends with two secondary varieties: Piquepoul Blanc and Ugni Blanc, up to a maximum of 20%. This diversity allows winemakers to craft white wines with unique aromatic profiles.
Northern Rhône: Exceptional Whites
The Northern Rhône is home to prestigious appellations for white wines: Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Péray shine with excellence. Viognier reigns supreme here, often blended with Roussanne and Marsanne. This area offers soft-textured white wines with floral aromas.
Viognier, widely planted in this terroir, is known for its aromatic and fruity nature, often expressing notes of apricot. It produces smooth and generous white wines.
The dry whites from the North are prized for their exceptional aging potential, with some cuvées reaching their peak after 10 years in the cellar.
Southern Rhône: Richness and Diversity of Vineyards
The Mediterranean climate of the Southern Rhône shapes uniquely expressive white wines. On these sun-kissed lands, grape varieties like Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc are often used.
The region’s stony, pebbly soils aid drainage and result in distinctive dry white wines.
Southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape—an iconic name—offer high-quality, generous whites. The mistral, a powerful regional wind, helps keep vines healthy, protects them from heat, and preserves grape aromas.
The Major AOCs of the Rhône Valley
The AOC Condrieu is known for its exclusive production of Viognier-based white wines. These cuvées reveal intense fruit aromas and a silky texture on the palate.
Saint-Péray, one of the oldest AOCs in France, produces wines with remarkable minerality thanks to its granite-rich soils. Its limestone subsoil adds further finesse.
Hermitage whites stand out for their aromatic power and exceptional aging ability. The Marsanne-Roussanne blend yields complex wines with notes of flowers, fruit, and honey.
In the South, Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc charms with citrus and white flower notes, while Lirac offers fresh cuvées with hints of dried fruit and pear.
