Béarn Red: Mountain Character in a Southwest Wine

The Béarn AOC, located near Salies-de-Béarn and Orthez, overlaps partly with Jurançon but is known for its reds made from Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

A terroir influenced by the Pyrenees

Gravel, clay and sandy soils combined with a temperate oceanic climate and mountain influences create slow ripening conditions — ideal for wines with both power and freshness.

Structured, spicy and honest wines

Béarn reds display notes of black fruit, spice, leather and occasionally licorice or garrigue. On the palate, they’re full-bodied with firm yet ripe tannins and a fresh backbone.

A lesser-known appellation with strong character

Béarn reds are underrated but expressive, offering excellent value and versatility — whether young or after a few years of aging.

Food pairings

Great with duck breast, beef stew, aged sheep’s cheese or dishes seasoned with herbs and spices. A match for grilled or braised meats.
