Nestled in the heart of the Basque Pyrenees near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Irouléguy is one of France’s smallest and most distinctive AOCs. Its steep, terraced vineyards yield powerful, character-driven red wines.
Vines grow on schist, clay-limestone or sandstone soils at altitude. The cool mountain climate, shaped by Atlantic winds, ensures slow ripening and aromatic complexity.
Irouléguy reds feature black cherry, blackberry, spice, licorice and warm stone notes. They are firm and fresh on the palate, with vibrant acidity and well-integrated tannins.
These mountain reds can age beautifully over 5 to 10 years, developing depth and nuance — yet they’re also enjoyable young when allowed to breathe.
Perfect with grilled beef, Basque veal axoa, spicy stews, or aged sheep’s cheese. A great companion to hearty, flavorful dishes.
