Though less known than the region’s iconic whites, Alsace’s red wines — primarily made from Pinot Noir — captivate with their elegance, fresh fruit expression and natural balance. They offer a refined and lesser-known facet of Alsace’s viticulture.
Pinot Noir is the star of Alsace reds. Depending on terroir and winemaking choices, it can produce light, fruity wines or more structured cuvées aged in oak, with notes of cherry, raspberry, spice and forest floor.
Alsace vineyards, nestled between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine, benefit from a wide variety of soils (limestone, granite, schist), offering wines with freshness and tension. Altitude and climate help preserve natural elegance.
Alsace reds pair beautifully with roasted poultry, white meats, savory tarts, vegetarian cuisine and regional specialties like tarte flambée or baeckeoffe.
In recent years, many producers have elevated Alsace Pinot Noir through careful plot selection, more ambitious vinification and a deeper focus on terroir-driven identity.
